For this personal project I decided to work on a sculpture with different slaps to show previously collected data. I looked for the data I could show. I first thought of making a map to show the ways of consuming according to continents, air travel around the world or the languages spoken in the regions of the world. Finally I decided to work on a mapping of the different parts of the brain stimulated when listening to music.

I have found multiple articles on this subject. I compared several schema and MRI before drawing my layers on Illustrator. I then laser cut the different layers in a wooden board before assembling them with wood glue. The layers were too thick, the rendering was not the desired one. So I decided to use sheets of paper for the layers. In order to assemble the final sculpture, I tried two different techniques. The first is to use ironing beads and double-sided tape. This technique is too long for this project. I finally used 3D foam pads, self adhesive.
First try: with wooden layers.
After one afternoon,
the brain is assembled!
WHAT DID I LEARN?

TECHNICS:
- Layers papers

MATERIALS:
- 3D Foam pads
- Colored paper

MACHINES/SOFTWARE:
- Laser cut
- Illustrator
- UV print
MY PARTNER?

Rick S
Second try: with paper layers.
2 different techniques to space the layers.
Finally, in order to complete the project and explain my approach, I laser cut a triangle leaflet with information detailing the project. I have illustrated the different parts of the brain according to their usefulness. All this will be printed using the UV printer.
COLLABORATIVE LEARNING

Loes helped me to find inspiration with a book on sculptures and paper works. As well as a site with sculptures of data through the ages. This week I collaborated with Rick S, he was a good support, he showed me stores where I could buy the equipment I needed. He helped me with the laser cutter adjustment. First I used ironing beads to space my diapers, but finally Rick and Katharina introduced me to a new material that I didn't know. It was more useful for this project.
DESIGN RESEARCH SKILLS

This week no classes. I did a lot of research to find the data I wanted to use. I searched official global data sites before focusing on articles and diagrams more specific to brain function. You can find the links to the articles above. For my illustration, I looked at a tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hZrlmgSC8k). I found similar projects using the paper layer technique so I was inspired by them. (You can find the project links on the description of my fascinations in week 3)
MAKER SKILLS AND ATTITUDE

This week, I was able to use the techniques I have learned since the beginning of the semester. I used the laser cutter. I first used the UV printer. Unlike the first few weeks, I thought about cutting dotted lines on my legend to make folding easier. I also thought about turning the paper over so that the laser burns would not appear.
